1946, Born on this day, Freddie Mercury singer, Queen, (1975 UK No.1 single 'Bohemian Rhapsody' also UK No.1 in 1991, plus over 40 other UK Top 40 singles. 1980 US No.1 single 'Crazy Little Thing Called Love'). Solo, (1987 UK No. 4 single 'The Great Pretender'). Mercury died of bronchio-pneumonia on November 24th 1991 aged 45, just one day after he publicly announced he was HIV positive.

1953, Guy Mitchell was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Look At That Girl' his second No.1 this year. As an international recording star of the 1950s he sold over six million singles.
1967, Engelbert Humperdinck was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'The Last Waltz', the singers second UK No.1.
1975, Glen Campbell started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Rhinestone Cowboy', his first No.1 after 13 Top 40 hits. The record gained three Grammy nominations and was the Country Music Association's Song of the Year for 1976.
1986, All girl group Bananarama went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Venus', the song had also been a No.1 for Dutch group Shocking Blue in 1970.

1976, Abba were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Dancing Queen', the group's fourth UK No.1 single and their only US No.1 chart topper. The song was a No.1 hit in over a dozen countries and stayed at the top of the Swedish charts for 14 weeks.
1985, John Parr started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'St Elmo's Fire', taken from the film of the same name a No.6 hit in the UK.
1934, Born on this day, Little Milton, US blues singer guitarist, (1965 US No.25 single 'We're Gonna Make It'). Milton died on 4th August 2005.

1940, Born on this day, Joe Negroni, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, (1956 UK No.1 & US No.6 single 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'). He died on 5th September 1978.
1941, 9th Sept 1941, Born on this day, Otis Redding, American singer-songwriter, record producer. After appearing at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, Redding wrote and recorded his iconic '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay' with Steve Cropper. The song became the first posthumous No.1 record on the Billboard Hot 100 and The Dock of the Bay became the first posthumous album to reach No.1 on the UK Albums Chart. Redding was killed in a plane crash on 10th December 1967.
