A motorcyclist was killed and internationally known singer-songwriter Norman Greenbaum was critically injured Saturday in a crash west of Santa Rosa.

The CHP identified Greenbaum, 72, best known for his 1969 hit “Spirit in the Sky,” as a passenger in a Subaru Outback that was involved in the 3:20 p.m. crash on Occidental Road near Piezzi Road.

The identity of the motorcyclist who was killed in the crash was withheld pending notification of his family, but he was believed to be 19 or 20 years old, emergency responders said.

Greenbaum is a longtime resident of Sonoma County. He and a male passenger on the motorcycle were transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with what CHP officials described as critical injuries.

The crash occurred after the Outback, traveling east on Occidental, turned left onto Piezzi Road and crossed into the path of the westbound motorcycle, CHP Sgt. David Derczo said.

The motorcycle, a 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600, wasn’t able to stop in time and slammed into the car, he said. It was unclear how fast the motorcycle was traveling.

The motorcycle’s driver died at the scene of the crash, said Santa Rosa Fire Battalion Chief Jack Piccinini.

The Subaru driver, Bonita Perea, 63, of Santa Rosa, escaped injuries.

“She’s very shaken by the whole incident,” Piccinini said.

The crash remains under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor, Derczo added.

Paul Kantner, co-founder of Jefferson Airplane, is recovering from a heart attack he suffered on Wednesday, forcing him to quit Jefferson Starship’s current tour, according to post on the band’s Facebook page.

“Hey everybody, Paul’s health took a bad turn this week. He’s in the hospital, stable and undergoing tests to find out exactly what’s going on but doctors suspect he had a heart attack. He is in the best possible care and we are sending him all of our best wishes, good thoughts and healing vibes. We’re continuing the tour without him, as most of the shows are sold out or close to it and we have to honor our contracts and our fans who bought tickets and put on the best show possible. We will dedicate every show to Paul until he is well enough to rejoin us onstage. Thank you for your continued support during this difficult time.”

Yesterday, the band posted a follow-up message: “Paul did indeed have a heart attack, he had a procedure this afternoon and he’ll be recovering in the hospital the next few days before heading back to San Francisco to recuperate.”

Kantner’s current band, which sometimes includes Airplane vocalist and co-founder Marty Balin, is one of the many incarnations of the Jefferson Airplane, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame band that pioneered the “San Francisco sound” in the mid-1960s with hits that included “Somebody to Love” and “White Rabbit.”

After the band was grounded by feuds and a lawsuit, Kantner and vocalist Grace Slick formed the Jefferson Starship in 1974, taking the name from a Kantner solo album. Slick stayed on after Kantner left, and had a few more hits, including “We Built This City,” before the band folded in the late 1980s.

Kantner has been touring for more than 20 years under variations of the Jefferson Starship name. The current incarnation of that group includes David Freiberg, also a former Jefferson Airplane member and co-founder of Quicksilver Messenger Service, and vocalist Cathy Richardson. They are in the middle of a tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jefferson Airplane.

For the state or feds?

Remember the electric pole several months ago? After 46 years they made a four way stop! It's just three houses from a school, as we wanted that many many years ago. Pulling out should be safer as the speeding west bound traffic is blind coming towards us.

I worked for a military contractor, but had a few side jobs with private clients. Sebastopol was a dry cleaner, tested for chemicals in the groundwater.

Glad to hear about the 4-way stop. yeah

We never let our only kid play out front because of the traffic problem. I was out weeding Monday as a girl didn't stop made a left turn on a cross street almost hit the near curb for our drive way making the turn a really short short cut. I yelled at her and shocked her! Don't know if I should tell her parents as we don't know them but I would walk my dog and say hi to them.
