Fiddles, Banjos, and Mandolins

Post by Lyra on Sat 24 Mar 2018, 6:04 am

...ukuleles, drums...flutes...whatever floats your boat  cheer

So, I'm an American, which means genealogically, I'm a mutt.
My roots are
German
Irish
Norwegian
...and possibly a smidgen of, most likely Lakota Sioux. (I won't go into all those boring details, except to say my father was adopted and so was his adopted mother)

Genealogy-generations, knowledge

I'm a story teller at heart...and I find the past fascinating, how people evolve and yet some threads remain of the core of the being that has really been around the world. Like a seed caught up on the currents of the wind, traveling thousands of miles to take root in another place.

Music is much like that ... it travels on the radio waves... fertilizing riffs and melodies taking root and making something new.

This past week I helped one of my clients clean out a closet. She had her grandfathers old mandolin in there. She said he played it in college back in 1906, so it at least dates to the 19th century. It has beautiful colored wood and a fat belly and I was able to strum a few bars on it before putting it back. Sounded wonderful.

She and I share a love for stringed instruments (also a violin player)...she also had a Ukulele that she got when she collected enough grocery stamps and sent away for it. Why don't cereal companies or whatever do that now. I would so collect stamps for a Ukulele  giggle  seriously  cuppa  giggle

Oh, the stories I could tell ...

feel free to tell your own as well

Just had my first black bird at my bird feeder for this spring...haven't seen them since last spring.

Fitting...it is snowing, ugh ... before long their little babies will be all over the yard hopping around. Last year I had to keep chasing one back into the yard. I was just hanging out in the middle of the street.

Stray Cats was the first concert for me in 7th or 8th grade. I had to beg my parents to not only drive me and my friend there, but allow me to go.

“All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.”

J.R.R. Tolkien

I had a very strange dream last night. I woke up to this song. Mandolins on my mind.

Hey, Lyra!  Great topic! cheers

My Dad was half English, half Norwegian, and my Mom's side is basically a mix of West Virginia mountain folk with a little Cherokee thrown in. I have a cousin who plays pro in a bluegrass band. It's really interesting how music travels from region to region, and forms itself with the current situation of people and their lives.

Lullaby music

A while ago when I was studying cymatics, I found a video of a girl singing the Lakota Lullaby, and the video presentation was the cymatic presentation with sand and a speaker, of that song.

Of course all these years later I can no longer find the video, maybe it is still there and I didn't search deeply enough.

It was this song.

My best friend from high school is Sioux, she was adopted as well.

anyhoo...my daughter called and I've lost my train of thought. I'll be back when I find it.  giggle

Not to draw out the point or make this a soap box...

the trick or treat depending on how one sees it is understanding what is taking place at the subatomic level, which I don't claim to know or understand on any level, except for a few brief glimpses here and there attained through creative arts.

I've always liked the bluegrass sound

As a long-standing Zeppelin fan from the '70s, I must point out that John Paul Jones on the mandolin and Page on acoustic guitar is really the only acceptable version of this.  drink

Evening Chrys  cheer

ok, I agree...sorry, I was a bit young (but not by much) to be a huge fan in the 70's, I was watching the Muppets  giggle ...but that song was always my all time favorite. editing: I should say my first favorite, or yes ...all time favorite, although Kashmir is a tie for first.

I was watching that one (video you posted) first, then it cut off before the song was over, so I went searching for a replacement, but really didn't find one that was the same song.

So, thanks and sorry cheersrock
